This group of pieces finds its place in the tradition of prelude-fugue pairs in different keys, as seen in J. K. F. Fischer, J. S. Bach, Hindemidth, Shostakovich, and others. It departs from the tradition in that some of the "strict" pieces are not fugues but passacaglia/chaconne forms and hybrids.

For recital purposes, groups of four to six of these pieces work well. When so played, the movements may be given names instead of just numbers. I've suggested a name for each one (shown in parentheses under the number).
